The PTSD Effect: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Its Intersections In The Legal System
By: Mike Shea
By focusing on the deployment and homecoming experiences of America’s most recent combat veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan, the symptoms of PTSD in war veterans of all eras will be explained and simplified for an audience of non-mental health providers. Other common problems associated with deployment will be described including Traumatic Brain Injury, addiction, violence, and suicide. Typical points of intersection for veterans with both the criminal justice and civil legal systems will be explored. A general explanation of treatment processes for PTSD is provided, with an emphasis on factors that could contribute to either success or failure of treatment efforts.
