Biography

Robert Laird has represented clients in a range of complex litigation. Prior to joining WTO, he was an associate in the Washington, D.C. office of a leading trial law firm and held an associate role at an Am Law 200 firm. He has trial and deposition experience, extensive writing experience at both the trial and appellate levels, and has represented clients in areas including commercial litigation, antitrust, product liability, enforcement actions, trademark infringement, and medical malpractice.

Cases

Matters Prior to WTO

  • Served on the defense team in a six-week nine-figure product liability trial.
  • Served on the defense team in a landmark putative class action regarding student-athletes' use of their names, images, and likenesses (NIL).
  • Drafted a successful Daubert motion which reduced the client's potential exposure in a trademark infringement suit by approximately $100 million.
  • Won a new trial and overturned a $40 million verdict in favor of plaintiffs in a medical malpractice suit after the jury foreperson disclosed various material biases on a public radio station.
  • Managed written discovery and document production responses in putative class action on behalf of nationwide energy company.
  • First-chaired a full defense verdict following a bench trial on behalf of a mother facing emergency eviction proceedings during the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • Represented a mother in her administrative appeal of the denial of a free appropriate public education for her daughter with disabilities.
