Biography

Nick Steverson represents clients in catastrophic tort cases, complex commercial litigation, and professional liability defense. Nick specializes in complex motions practice. He has briefed issues in both federal and state courts, including amicus briefing before the U.S. Supreme Court. Additionally, Nick’s courtroom experience includes examining witnesses at trial, arguing numerous pre-trial motions, and negotiating jury instructions with opposing counsel and the court. He assists sophisticated clients in the healthcare industry, particularly in psychiatric and behavioral health, and also represents attorneys in legal malpractice and business tort matters.  

Before joining WTO, Nick served as a law clerk and judicial extern to Chief Justice Brian D. Boatright of the Colorado Supreme Court, gaining invaluable experience in appellate litigation. Nick graduated as first in his class from the University of Colorado Law School, and his law school honors included the Order of the Coif, the Order of Barristers, and the Dean’s List. He was articles editor of the University of Colorado Law Review, Vol. 93, and a member of the AAJ and All-Star National Challenge Mock Trial teams, the Colorado Law Academic Review and Planning Advisory Committee, and the Dean’s Student Advisory Committee on COVID-19. Nick twice earned first place and Best Advocate in the Carrigan Cup Mock Trial. He also served as research assistant to Professor Aya Gruber, and teaching assistant to Professor Amy Griffin and Professor Amy Bauer. 

Cases

  • Represented a civil rights organization in certiorari and merits-stage briefing before the U.S. Supreme Court in a Fourth Amendment case with national implications.
  • Successfully excluded expert testimony in trial where we represented a hospital in a case involving a physician accused of sexual abuse.
  • Representing an acute children's hospital in consolidated case from 40 plaintiffs involving criminal conduct allegations against a physician.
  • Conducted investigation into patient suicide and achieved favorable pre-litigation settlement of high-exposure claims.
  • Conducted investigation into claims of patient abuse at a facility closed for fifteen years prior to plaintiff's claims, resulting in favorable pre-suit settlement.
  • Drafted a successful "Reptile" motion in a case involving claims against a medical facility, limiting inflammatory and unfair arguments by plaintiff's counsel at trial.
  • Representing a major behavioral healthcare network in multiple medical malpractice cases involving sensitive claims of sexual and physical abuse.
